iPET Network were the first Awarding Organisation to launch a regulated Canine First Aid qualification and continue to be leaders in this field, updating and adapting the qualification as veterinary science and advise progresses.

The iPET Network Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid is perfect for owners and professionals alike who want to be prepared should a pet need emergency treatment. The qualification covers the most commonly faced canine emergencies such as how to treat injury, dress wounds, allergic reactions, stings, poisoning, choking, seizures, CPR, hypothermia and much more.

The qualification is an excellent balance of theoretical and practical learning to ensure Candidates have the knowledge required should they ever be faced with an emergency first aid situation. Leading industry experts have reviewed this qualification to ensure the outcome is appropriate for the animal care industry and the continued growth and development of the sector.

  1. Assessment and Observation: Teaching participants how to assess a dog's vital signs, behaviour, and overall condition to determine the severity of the situation.
  2. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Techniques for performing CPR on dogs, including chest compressions and rescue breathing.
  3. Choking and Airway Obstruction: How to recognise signs of choking and techniques for clearing a dog's airway.
  4. Wound Care and Bleeding Control: Methods for cleaning and bandaging wounds, controlling bleeding, and preventing infection.
  5. Fractures and Limb Injuries: Identification of fractures and other limb injuries, and techniques for stabilising and immobilising the affected area.
  6. Heatstroke and Hypothermia: Signs, symptoms, and treatment of heatstroke and hypothermia in dogs.
  7. Poisoning and Toxin Ingestion: Common toxins and household hazards for dogs, recognition of poisoning symptoms, and appropriate first aid measures.
  8. Seizures and Shock: How to respond to seizures and manage shock in dogs.
  9. Burns and Electrical Injuries: First aid for burns caused by heat, chemicals, or electricity.
  10. Transportation and Handling: Safely transporting an injured dog to veterinary care, including techniques for lifting and carrying.
  11. Emergency First Aid Kits: Guidance on assembling and maintaining a first aid kit specifically for dogs, including essential supplies and medications.
  12. Preventive Measures: Education on preventive measures to reduce the risk of accidents and emergencies, such as dog-proofing the home and yard.
  13. Legal and Ethical Considerations: Understanding legal and ethical responsibilities when providing first aid to dogs, including knowing when to seek professional veterinary care.
  14. Demonstrations and Hands-on Practice: Hands-on practice of various first aid techniques with CASPAR CPR dog.

The iPET Network Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid course is delivered via in person practical training in Cheshire, Herefordshire or Shropshire and consists of one mandatory theoretical and practical unit:

  • Unit 391: Canine First Aid.
  • GLH (Guided Learning Hours): 6 hours
  • TQT (Total Qualification Time): 9 hours
