How to Groom a Jack Russell

The Jack Russell is a commonly known household pet, renowned for being the small, loyal companion every family hopes to have as their dog. Aside from their affectionate, loving ways, another great positive for having a Jack Russell breed in your family is their rather low maintenance needs when it comes to grooming.

How often should a Jack Russell be Groomed?

One of the main causes of excess shedding can be irritated skin. You must make sure you don’t bathe your Jack Russell Terrier too often, as this will harm their skin and affect the health of their coat. Bathing only when needed and regular brushing (sometimes daily in the seasonal change months where their shedding is higher) with a bristle brush can be all your Jack Russell’s grooming needs to be.

Do Jack Russells shed a lot of hair?

Jack Russell Terriers do shed their hair, they can either have a smooth or rough coat and their hair is usually quite short, making it much easier for you to groom. As their hair is so short, this does result in quite a lot of shedding all year round, getting particularly worse when the seasons change in Spring and Autumn.

How to stop my Jack Russell from shedding

Regularly brushing your Jack Russell will help greatly reduce the amount they shed , making your life much easier. As you brush through your dog's hair, you move skin oil across their body, which helps the fur to stay in place better and reduces their shedding.

How to Trim a Jack Russell Terrier

Your Jack Russell Terrier will need very few trims; the most you will need to do is probably regular trimming of the longer hair on their face using bull-nose scissors. Use thinning scissors to trim excess hair on their feet, toes and tail and smarten your dog up every so often.

How often should I Groom my Jack Russell?

Smooth-haired Jack Russell

A smooth-haired Jack Russell should only need brushing once a week to remove dirt and any dead hair to keep their coat looking healthy and shiny. A slicker brush is a good choice for this as it will help remove the mounted hair.

Rough-coat Jack Russell

A rough-coated Jack Russell Terrier will require a bit more care than those with a smooth coat. Regular brushing will keep their coat looking healthy, but they benefit from having their coat stripped twice a year. They shed more hair during Spring and Autumn so using a stripping comb is great for removing any hair they couldn't shed. This process doesn't damage the fur, but just removes the excess dead hair leaving the coat healthier.

Do I need to check my Jack Russell's Ears?

Grooming time is always a good time to check your Jack Russell's ears for mites or other issues. To clean, moisten a cotton wall ball with ear cleaner and gently wipe the outer ear canal. You should only need to do this once a month.

Caring for a Jack Russell's Paws?

Jack Russell's nails should be clipped every 3-4 weeks to avoid any discomfort or pain. Cut using nail clippers, removing small amounts of nail at a time. You should see a small white dot in the centre of the nail. If you remove more nail, you’ll see a red dot that is the beginning of the quick, which is the blood supply to the nail. Stop at this point. If you accidentally cut beyond this point you can stop the bleeding using a nail clotting powder. Finish by using a pair of bull nose scissors to trim the hair around the feet and any long hair between the undersides of the pads and feet.
