London 2012 Equestrian Update – Team GB Win Olympic Gold

Great Britain’s riders have obtained a gold medal in the team show jumping competition. They achieved the medal after dramatic jump off against the Netherlands. Saudi Arabia took bronze after being the overnight leaders.

The two teams were tied after the main team competition with eight penalty points apiece. The testing 13 obstacle course was shortened to eight jumps, and where two of the Dutch riders incurred faults, three of our riders jumped clear in a spectacular effort. Jumping clear was Nick Skelton on Big Star, Ben Maher on Tripple X, and Peter Charles on Vindicat. Scott Brash also rode, hitting a single fence.

This is Great Britain’s first show jumping gold medal since 1952, and is the first Olympic show jumping medal of any kind since 1984. The medal is Team GB’s 17 gold in the games so far, and is our second equestrian medal in the competition. Brash, Skelton and Maher are also through to individual show jumping final, which takes place Wednesday afternoon.
