Groomers Team Rider Profile – Sam Griffiths
Internationally renowned Australian event rider and Groomers Team member Sam Griffiths is currently ranked 15th in the UK and 24th in the world. Based in the UK since 1995, Sam has enjoyed an illustrious career in eventing, including a 4th place at the Badminton CCI**** for 2011, and 5th place in the HSBC Classics for 2009. With a number of successful results so far this season; he won at Houghton CIC*** on Real Dancer, and he also came third at Belton on Paulank Brockagh (“Brocks”), where he jumped a double clear, Sam continues to establish himself as a strong contender within the eventing scene.
Short-listed for both the Athens and Beijing Olympics, many expected Sam would be due for a call-up for London 2012 with the experienced ‘Happy’. It was certainly a disappointment when he was not included in selection.
However, as any equestrian enthusiast will know, no matter how positive a position a rider may be in prior to an event, there are a whole bucket of variables that can turn dreams to dust. Illness and injury can plague both riders and horses and weather can halt events altogether (as we’ve seen this eventing season). As it would happen injured and lame horses (ridden by Shane Rose and Megan Jones) have now made way for ‘Happy’ to put his best hoof forward at Greenwich, and we will all be supporting Sam in his medal quest. Let’s see if he (along with Nicola Wilson) can prove the selecters wrong…
Groomers wish the whole Australian team the best of luck – after the Brits of course!
