In 1984, the Grimes family formed Groomers after many years of experience working and developing human shampoos and cosmetics. They were approached by a Veterinary Laboratory to develop a shampoo that could contain Pure Evening Primrose Oil, as Dr. David Scarf had researched the benefits of using such pure oil for soothing sore and sensitive skin on dogs.
Unbeknown to Groomers the laboratory had also instructed other manufacturers to formulate this product. After many hours, David Grimes formulated a shampoo to contain pure cold pressed evening primrose oil. Something that had never been achieved before!
Months went past and nothing was heard from the laboratory. Then out of the blue they called and requested if we could manufacture larger amounts of this wonder product! We returned to the formulation only to find that all records had been lost. It then took us another three years to manufacture the product which is readily available today.
In the early days David and his daughter Paula Bryan set about a huge marketing campaign, sending out samples and literature to professional groomers, breeders and exhibitors asking what they thought of the product. From their research campaign the product was branded and it started to sell via Mail Order. At first, Mail Order started as a series of one-off orders to a small group of satisfied customers. But by 1998 these orders had escalated and Groomers had to move their manufacturing sector to a new warehouse on New Greenham Park just outside of Newbury. With an ever increasing product range the Grimes family started to take their trade stand to open and championship shows. Word of mouth spread quickly and owners soon flocked to the stand to take product away with them.
Then in February 2003, David retired from Groomers and his interest was bought by Graham Searle. Today the company is directed by Graham and Paula, and since their amalgamation the company has rapidly expanded to become one of the leading suppliers of animal grooming equipment. The reason for growth is put down to a new bright illustrated brochure that is produced yearly with an every increasing product range to include professional dryers, blasters, hydraulic & electric tables and new designer dog baths.
Groomers own labelled products is now an established premium brand, which is distributed via Pets at Home Stores, Pampurred Pets and many independent pet shops, wholesalers, agents and discerning breeders. Export market is also covered by Australia, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Japan,Norway,USA and most recently France.
And so to the present day. Groomers is still growing at a fast pace in the Canine sector. The Groomers brand is recognised for premium quality products. with new and innovative products joining the portfolio to include the most recent - SIMPLY NATURALS to include grooming products and for the future and whole range of natural treats.
Our recent step into the Equine market is also gaining momentum with New additions always joining the portfolio. This year at BETA we will be launching our Leatherdress Saddle Soap to include Pure Cold Pressed Evening Primrose Oil to clean and nourish leather.
Paula Bryan was elected as Director and Trustee for the Pet Care Trust in 2007, providing help and advice for the Manufacturing Industry.
